After two years of discussions, workshops, redesigns, and community consultations, Lalitpur Metropolitan City, supported by Nepal Cycle Society, is excited to announce the vehicle-free zone trial at the UNESCO World Heritage Site Patan Durbar Square, starting November 29, 2025.
What began as an ambitious idea has now become a necessity. Increasing traffic around the heritage site was impacting safety, local businesses, cultural experiences, and the environment. This project is the result of collaboration at every level:
City Police – for traffic management, safety, and enforcement
Ward Offices & Local Leaders – for coordination and administrative support
Community Members & Residents – whose feedback guided every decision
Women’s Groups – offering perspectives on mobility, safety, and inclusive spaces
This trial is a first step toward making Patan Durbar Square more pedestrian-friendly, vibrant, and sustainable. Over the coming weeks, we will learn how limiting vehicles can revitalize public space, enhance safety, support businesses, and protect our heritage.
Together, let’s make this trial a success!
